Generally Sony makes products with greater research and PS3 is one of the better alternatives. In my opinion, the prices need to come down and may be Sony will benefit more.

Well i think the PS3 is going to leave all its comp in the dust....
just look at the popularity of the PS2 & PS-one they are still going strong. Its almost natural for it to shrug off the competition as fly-by-night PS is hear to stay. You can rely on it. It is the bench mark others have to beat !!!

Price is a big factor. I have a lot of friends who have been adamant about waiting for the PS3. When I explain to them that it will cost £425 the reaction has been either "your bloody kidding" or "im off to buy a 360 then".

I am generally skeptical of what analysts have to say about the game industry, but this seems like a very solid critique of Sony's premium strategy.

Since the Super NES, I can't think of a single case in which a console or handheld with the highest technology was the market leader: the N64, the first Xbox, the Game Gear, and PSP all came in second place despite their prettier graphics. Even on the PC side of the industry, megahits like the Blizzard games have never required the very latest graphics cards.

A premium brand can still succeed if it has loyal customers or a particularly sexy brand image, so the PS3 could still be a profit success even if it is not a market share winner. But judging by the amount of Sony-bashing in every Slashdot Games article, the zeitgeist may have turned against them.
